Were you planning on attending MLS Cup this November in Seattle? To be honest – I wasn’t. At least until, one day, while sipping a latte and reading the Guardian cover-to-cover in Googlereader and listening to the BBC, a group of masked thugs kicked in the front door to my house. In the blink of an eye, I was face down on the ground, my arm twisted to the breaking point and the nuzzle of a cold revolver against my head… Continue reading “Corporate Overlords Toss you a Dime” »

Intermediate Spanglish 102 – Los Fans

The people have clamored for more interactive lesson-planning. You are bored of reading my writing. It’s okay. I’m not offended. Not in the slightest. I had a good cry or two, but I’m over it. You, the student-consumer are always right. Plus I also found some fantastic supporters videos courtesy of Miguel of El Batallon, a Houston Dynamo fan group. The Audacity of Heliotrope

Listen up! Fredorrarci of the understatedly spectacular Sportisatvshow has contributed a guestpost on the most essential of topics: the kit. For American readers, a kit is a jersey, not where you store the tools you inherited from your grandfather but seldom if ever use. Continue reading “The Audacity of Heliotrope” »
Gulati´s Remarks – Some Explanatoriation

People are confused. To be more specific, Indians, Brits, and Aussies are confused. The president of US soccer, Sunil Gulati, recently stated that “US´s soccer´s faith never wavered in Bob Bradley.” But if that´s so, then why was Bradley hired on an interim basis?
What they don´t realize is that in these here United States of America the term “interim” really means “unconditional belief and uncompromising faith.” (Snicker)
Great And…Not Great – Maradona

Diego Maradona, el pibe diez, Dieguito, the undisputed greatest footballer of all time…from Argentina. I once again refrain from wading into the Diego-Pele debate, but whom did I write about first? Hint. But now onto Diego´s playing and coaching career, prime fodder for dizzying heights and seafloor lows. Continue reading “Great And…Not Great – Maradona” »
It´s come to Fisticuffs…

Have you heard of fistedaway? Really? I guess that makes you pretty ignorant since the Guardian has. But not even the Guardian could have predicted another guestpost, by me, regarding Sir Alex´s rage at…no, not refs…his player´s eating habits. Find the scoop here.
Caplleo´s Sleight of Tongue…

Fabio Capello recently spoke at a conference and mentioned Michael Owen. But, to be honest, I don´t care. What interested me more was the sleight of tongue when discussing a return to Juventus. Browse the article, skimming the Owen nonsense and reading the second-to-last paragraph.
Did you catch it? “…In football, anything can happy…”? A potential typo from ESPN? Likely. A Freudian glimpse into Fabio´s post-England plans? Possibly.
Recap: Liverpool v. United – A Red Harvest

The dame wore red.
I sat at my desk, sorting through collections bills, light bills, water bills, and every kind of bill but the kind I like to see – green. It was one of those days you would throw away if the trashcan was big enough. But it wasn´t. And I didn´t.
And then she appeared, a shallow shadow of her former beauty. The burnt red hair had faded and showed shades of gray hidden by dollar store cosmetics. Her smile charmed, if you could get over the yellow stains from a lifetime of smoking and a half-assed bleach job. But who was I to say no to a client. Continue reading “Recap: Liverpool v. WC 2010: Let the pessimism begin, part 1

The 2010 World Cup is only 8 months away, yet the pessimistic build-up has begun. I have concerns about linking to this piece at the Times, but someone must defend the dark continent. And why not a person who has never visited there but once perused through a travel guide. Continue reading “WC 2010: Let the pessimism begin, part 1” »
