Well, I’m sure MLS wanted a reasonably long deal – he is 27 and at his peak (well, the peak for most players). It’s interesting how far Beckham’s star power faded as the LA Galaxy improved as a team and actually won some key games – I actually rather enjoyed the circus

I also think part of the contract length has to do with him being the MLS’ star player again. Beckham is 34 y/o I believe. So his playing time will probably diminish from here on out until he finally hangs his boots up. So that means Landon is going to go back to being the #1 guy in the league again and I am sure that is why the MLS wanted a lengthy contract. It also gave Donovan some leverage in negotiations I am sure.

Good call Brandon – the contract extension is a good pay bump for Donovan and, if he has a terrific World Cup, he and the league can use it to get an even better transfer deal. I kinda wish he would have shorter term deals so he would taste the freedom of free agency, but to each their own…

i imagine the galaxy players will have a sense of deja vu since they, along with Donovan, probably felt a bit alienated after the Beckham deal was announced. this should be very interesting that’s for sure.
